The girl is putting up a brave
fight and we are praying for her. She wants to live more and she wants to know
if her perpetrators have been arrested.
Yes, five of them are caught but
reports say they are remorseless on what they have done.
The promises say efforts would be
made to wind up the case within two months.
Delhi’s chief minister says she is
ready to take the girl abroad for treatment.
Delhi High Court is positive about
setting up of special courts to handle rape cases.
Reports say government is
considering amending law to include death sentence as a possible penalty in
rape cases.
Home Minister Sushil Kumar
Shinde has spoken of forming a task force to monitor the safety and security of
women in Delhi.
All said and done, still the
sixth accused is at large. Some reports said of presence of one more accused. No further words about it.
People are demanding action on
the careless cops. Protesters at the Delhi CM’s residence were to face
water-cannon yesterday.
The Delhi Police commissioner
said the incident was horrible yet he went on to add that it was not possible
check every bus. Remember, he is the police head of the national capital of India making
such a pathetic statement.
Then there was yet another
irresponsible statement by yet another high-raking cop, the police commissioner
of Thane, Maharashtra who put forward
unsolicited advice of using chilly-powder for self-defence. How silly! What are
these high-ranking cops for then?
The Parliament was quick in
reacting. Some of the parliamentarians broke down on the savagery in this case.
They could have easily amended and passed a Bill with tougher penal action
against the rape cases. See the horrible data on rape from two secondary media
sources:
AFP: Official figures show
rape cases alone more than doubled between 1990 and 2008, though part of the
rise could be attributed to better reporting.
National crime records show
that 228,650 of the total 256,329 violent crimes recorded last year targeted
women, with conviction rates for rape cases at 26 percent.
CNN-IBN: The number of rapes
in India shot up from 1953 to 2011 by a staggering 873 per cent, the CPI-M's
"People's Democracy" said in its latest edition released Thursday.
The 873 per cent rise since
1953 to 2011 is three times faster than all cognizable crimes put together and
three-and-a-half times faster than murder. And between 2007 and 2011, rape
incidents rose by 9.7 per cent.
The People's Democracy quoted
the newspaper Guardian as saying: "Of all the G-20 nations, India has been
labelled the worst place to be a woman."
In a survey conducted by
Thomson Reuters' Trust Law Women, a hub of information and support for women's
rights, India ranked with Afghanistan, Congo
and Somalia
as one of the most dangerous places for women.
What this set of data says has
been an open truth. You don’t need an eye-opener anymore. But, probably Mr.
Shinde and his colleagues need.
Mr. Shinde, it has continued for
years and you still need a task force to understand?
Why couldn’t the Parliament enact
a tougher law when this case was reported first and we had an instant
nationwide outrage erupted the next day on December 17? Parliament’s Winter Session
had its last day on December 21 and that still made it four days from December
17 to make a conclusive decision.
And above all, we the victims,
who acted so carelessly. There were many who passed the stretch, saw both of
them, but none bothered to care about. The time that lapsed between a good
human soul seeing and reporting about and the help reaching to them was of
prime medical importance for the girl now putting a spirited fight for her
right to live.
Maddening and heartless, isn’t
it? And it is not just Delhi
specific Mr. Shinde!
